ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Yikes! Will this never end?

Of course not. *rolls eyes*

I saw this yesterday, and it freaked me out. Also made me wonder if these are the people who shut down Megaupload, as opposed to the geniuses behind SOPA.

I really don't know which group is responsible. My paranoid side is telling me they're all in cahoots with each other in an effort to unplug us from the internet and plug us into something else--like the Matrix. Down, evil plotbunnies, down!

Oy--I feel ya on those plot bunnies. Mine are having a field day.

I usually enjoy crazy plotbunnies, but now that real events are inspiring the plotbunnies, suddenly it's not quite as fun.

It is for me. Stories are powerful things. You never know they might affect people.

True. Scariest thing about stories is, you can't always be certain whether the impact will be positive or negative. You can only scribble or type away and hope for the best.

No, they have been going after Megaupload for ages.
Neither SOPA or PIPA had anything to do with it-- I'm having trouble finding exactly what they used again, and I can't remember the name of whatever it was that helped take it down, but it had been enacted decades ago.
Megauploader's founders got in a lot of trouble, and there's documentation of them saying things along the lines of "lol, we make our money off of theft XD".
On top of that, I believe they were paying certain uploaders who were uploading illegal content for something-- I guess download traffic to their website.

I still think that removing a company for user created content is a horrible, horrible way to deal with piracy, however.

So the Megaupload founders are not guiltless?

I agree-taking out entire companies for what their users do is wrong.

It sounded like they were actually not mmmmm.... operating entirely legally, yea.
I don't know how true these claims are, but I've been under the impression that they are. It seems that they were actually supporting the piracy on their website (it did give them a large amount of profit, after all, so I can understand that) rather than really trying to remove it.

Oh my--if that's the case, I don't feel as badly for them. Definitely going a bit far in the dealing of it, but bragging that your company is making money off of illegal activity is just stupid.

But they were disobeying US laws that didn't apply to them. XD
They never would have gotten taken down if it wasn't for their servers in Virginia. Which is rather amazing, really.

True enough, but bragging about it is still stupid.

ughhh what is this?!?! what happened to the US 'freedom of speech'? I can see other countries forcing this through, but wouldn't this somehow be unconstitutional?

Very few people care about the constitution anymore, let alone free speech. Free speech always has been and always will be a threat to domination. Anyone who wants to dominate won't look kindly on constructive criticism.

We've seen examples of "isn't safety more important than freedom" many times already.
The TSA exsisting is one of them, those darned red-light cameras are an other.

This is protecting copyright holders, and that's the only way they're gaining support. Because this act is for our own protection.
And that's how it starts; that's how it has always started.

On top of that, I can only imagine that a few of the people going for this don't actually understand the way things work on the internet or something :\
