Quick Check-In

Hullo, everyone! Hope you are doing well.
Phoenix Comicon was a blast, despite a scare with an armed nutjob on Thursday, horrific organization Friday, and a prop weapons ban for the rest of the con. Will post pictures when I have the energy. And also blog about the books I've been slowly thumbing through and the manga I blazed through with abandon.
A personal post may also be in the works, my moods have swung particularly extreme lately, and life seems to equal fatigue and lack of patience.
What's been happening in your neck of the woods?

Date: 2017-05-30 03:36 pm (UTC)I've been trying to apply to more things (grad school, jobs, supervisory certification classes, etc.), which is going okay but so far still no bites. I did learn how to make angel food cake from scratch, which was awesome! And something my mom has never done, so next time I'll be showing HER how to do it. I'm absurdly proud of that.
My print review of Neil Gaiman's "Norse Mythology" comes out in the newspaper this month, so that's awesome! There should be a digital link somewhere, so I'll probably post that when it's time. Also--WONDER WOMAN THIS WEEKEND! I dunno if I'll actually be able to go this weekend, bc it's also Rent Week and that sucked up most of my paycheck. I get paid again on Friday but I know presales are going fast, so it's a timing thing more than anything. I'll get to it eventually though!
Been blogging too much about Supernatural, as you know, and bought that "Family Don't End With Blood" book w cast and fan written chapters. I've only read the intro so far and the fact that the author/editor did not get into fandom until adulthood fascinates me. Fandom has been part of my identity for as long as I can remember. Even when it was just me and my Dad discussing the symbolism of the Jedi and the Force; or me and Mom talking about the cultural implications of "Planet of the Apes;" or my cousins passing around a single battered copy of "Ender's Game" and waiting for everyone to get caught up so we could talk about it TOGETHER.
This woman was a stranger to fandom until Supernatural. Like...how does that happen? What is life like for people who only fangirl over one thing, and don't discover that thing until adulthood? Fandom is such a formative part of my identity. I would not be who I am without Star Wars, The Neverending Story, Harry Potter, Buffy, etc, etc, etc. It's just weird to me. Not in a bad way, but it's...weird.
ETA: Sorry your moods have been erratic lately. I've seen a lot of that going around lately. For myself, too. Hang in there. Please take care of yourself.

Date: 2017-06-01 03:03 pm (UTC)Sorry nothing's coming through yet with applications and jobs and stuff, but yay for angel food cake! That was the cake I saw on Twitter, right? And there's something absurdly satisfying about showing something to the person who always seems to know more about everything. LOL. :)
Woohoo, yay for getting your review in print! Looking forward to reading it. :)
And yes, Wonder Woman just looks better and better the more I learn about it. My fave local theater (which is also very cheap) has showings this evening, so I may go if I'm not too exhausted from work.
Gahhh, I want to read your thoughts on Supernatural so bad. These last few weeks have been way too hectic, family wise. *shakes fist*

Really? Whoa, that is hard to wrap my brain around. Did the author mean fandom as in, intensely liking something, or intensely liking something with a community of people? Like you, I've always had intense fangirl obsessions, but until I got active on the internet, it was just family who I got to share it with.
This is gonna sound corny, but I only recently realized that both my parents are nerdy/geeky. Though my dad will never identify as one. They both did well in school and got degrees, with a combination of scholarships and working their way through, if I remember right. They both grew up on the original Star Trek series. My dad saw the first Star Wars movie as a teen and loved it. And some of my earliest memories are of my parents watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. So it hit me it was pretty inevitable I turned out geeky, too.
And I'm 100% with you, it's hard to picture life without our fandoms. They inspire and motivate us so much, help us through difficulties, and just enrich our lives in general. Like, what do people do with their time if they don't have that?
Agreed, moods have been all over the place with a lot of people at work, too. I don't know what's up with life right now, but everybody's taking a battering of some form. (I think my team having tough times is aggravating my own issues. It takes a lot of work to be firm but empathetic as a boss. Even at an introvert-friendly place where we're usually too busy to interact face to face. Add anxiety to the mix and it's doubled.) Will definitely take care of myself! I've been going easy and resting a lot since Comic-con.

Date: 2017-06-02 03:50 am (UTC)And yes, the angel food cake is the one I posted the picture of! There were also strawberries, blueberries, and whipped cream, so yeah, that's been very satisfying.
Gahhh, I want to read your thoughts on Supernatural so bad.
You can read this one! That's for "Ladies Drink Free," which was right before "The Future," which I think was the last one you said you saw? Anyways, yeah, that one should be safe. :)
Like, what do people do with their time if they don't have that?
HAHAHAHA, I almost said this exact thing! "What do you people DO when you aren't fangirling?" Probably says something about us. Something AWESOME.
Anyways. Keep hanging in there. I'm going to my first counseling session in, oh, maybe ten years tomorrow morning. Gulp. Found out the VA employee assistance program covers mental health stuff AND applies to all employees even if you're part time, so I'm taking advantage of that and trying to get a referral to someone that won't cost too much. (This service is only good for eight appointments, so.)
And then WONDER WOMAN. Hopefully. If it doesn't sell out. (Weirdly, I kinda hope it sells out--not so I can't see it, but because I want this movie to make ALL OF THE MONEY.)

Date: 2017-06-02 07:06 pm (UTC)Yay, I hopped over to read and comment on your thoughts on Claire's werewolf episode. Mostly loved that episode, though I had my quibbles.
Probably says something about us. Something AWESOME.
Yes, indeed.

*MEGA HUGS* I admire your bravery in going. I've never had one myself and the concept is terrifying. Hope it goes well and you get the insight and grounding you can use, even after the 8 sessions are used up.
Yep, really hope Wonder Woman does well, and looks like it's off to a great start.

Date: 2017-06-03 03:25 am (UTC)Heh, well I sat on the number for the office for months before actually making the appointment, however brave that is. It went well, by the way! I absolutely recommend talk therapy if you can swing it. It's not easy, but these guys are trained to be easy to talk to.
I wrote a thing about Wonder Woman, by the way! Just got back and it was SO GOOOOOD! https://rhoda-rants.dreamwidth.org/242772.html

Date: 2017-06-05 06:51 am (UTC)Thank you! Those two words have been frequently coming to mind since the election season started, sadly.
And I'm glad your appointment went well! It certainly does help that they all know how to listen and let you go at your own pace.
