gothrockrulz: (nuada)

A while back, I said I wasn't quite sure whether I liked the "new" Evanescence album or not.

Well, now I'm sure. It's a definite YES. "The Change" is my favorite of the batch, mostly because I love the power and intensity of the melody, and because I identify a lot with the lines, "I've been screaming on the inside / And I know you feel the pain."

I'm not sure exactly what the band intended the spin on these lyrics to be (I'm assuming it's about a romantic relationship), but I did a little searching, and came across a fan's theory detailing that the song is literally about Evanescence's change in music style. I have no idea if she's anywhere near the mark, but she sure got a few plotbunnies hopping.

For me, the song, or at least some of its fragments, is hauntingly reminiscent of an inner monologue between conflicting personalities within the same person. The emerging darker personality screaming for acknowledgment and acceptance from the dominant "normal" personality that masks it, and the "normal" personality still trying to convince itself that its darker twin doesn't exist--or if it does, it isn't of any consequence and it holds no sway. (Is my personality anything like that? Maybe. Actually, YES.)

Whatever the interpretation, this song still rocks.
